Re: Spring Garden
We are blessed to be able to get things in the ground early. You have to because July and August are just too hot to grow anything. But then again, we can plant around mid August for a fall garden.Calypso Jones wrote:We usually can't plant till mid May. We're close but in the past, we've seen frost up till the first week in May. That's why i dare not. Nurseries say they won't have tomato plants till the 27th so i really can't plant till at least the 27th. I could put them in the ground at that point, and just watch the weather daily....if it looks suspicious, i could do what hawk does and put a bucket over the plants and then a blanket.
Usually won't get frost or a freeze until mid Nov.

Yes, you are. We here could probably put in a fall garden, but we're not as ambitious as you are, I'm afraid. We did once. Put in corn just for the cows. It worked out well.HawkTheSlayer wrote:We are blessed to be able to get things in the ground early. You have to because July and August are just too hot to grow anything. Even before that crop, I loved sitting under a shade tree out in the field with Mr. 2 shucking corn. What fun hand-feeding the shucks to the cows. A little skeery, too, sometimes. Those puppies can get quite greedy ...and pushy!

Oh, how disheartening that must be! But then, at least you're wise enough to pay attention to the weather, and don't have plants in that would go to ruin.Calypso Jones wrote:WeVe got frost warning this weekend. after 86 degrees for a few days this past week and today.
Hang in there. Your patience will pay off. (As if you needed me to tell you that.)

Yeah. Sat. night, low of 33. I think we'll be safe, though, 'cuz all we have above ground so far is some onions and garlic. I think we're good to go. Thanks for the heads up, though.HawkTheSlayer wrote:Frost and freeze warning close to @2cent too in Missouri.

Re: Spring Garden
In Kennewick it is finally warming up from the coldest March and second coldest April on record thus have to get to planting Lettuce which will be my Teen Daughters job to grow this year.
Will buy some Tomatoes plants and bury 95% of it into the ground in the trench method then cover with the Empty 1 gallon milk containers with bottom cut out.
My other Daughter will plant BLUE Corn in a 4'X20' raised bed maybe next week when soil warms up more.
Will plant 12 Nasturtiums for the leaves and flowers to eat.

You could shade them during that time especially if you use the bed method such as 4'X15' or longer.
