Garden and Yard Talk Empty Garden and Yard Talk

Post by Huntn Tue Feb 28, 2023 2:07 pm

Winter was over in Houston the last gasp  about 2 weeks ago , when the  lows were in the low 30Fs, sad to see it go, too short lived for my tastes, from here smooth sailing a few months of what I would describe as our Spring tolerable weather before the harsh oven-like temps that kick in sometime in May. Time to get to work in the garden.

We're going to get some 40s on da bayou in a few days. But its been summer in Feb for about 10 days. We've set record highs 5 days in a row. It's 84 right now. I think we'll get another degree out of it.
After that little cool coming up, I'll plant maters.

48 sat morning, 49 sun morning. Then back to heat. Lol.
That's not cold enough to worry about.

I'll think I'll go plant shopping tomorrow .

I'm glad I live down here.
And boy! The crawfish ponds are kicking ass in this warm weather.
The Atchafalaya Basin is a little behind but there is a big rise heading down thge Mississippi River and that will flood the basin real good.

I hate the heat. I like to have 4 seasons with summer being the shortest.

Gardening is good exercise.
I went from a couch potato(patate[pronounced pah-tot] de sofa en francais) to planting potatos.
I did not plant myself and I did not , lache pas la patate( don't drop the potato).

Boy I used to love to listen to this with my grandma when I was a little "tot". Lolol.

There is both a French and English version by Jimmy C.Newman.

But you (I think ) and I pay for the mild winters in the oven months.

I grew up in Maryland, a nice middle latitude, have lived on both coasts, then moved to Minnesota for 20 years and retired to Texas mostly to make my wife happy, closer to her family. . Did a military tour here before based in Corpus Christi and Kingsville.

I think if you can afford it, the ideal situation is two houses, one up North and one down South, but most can’t, and if I was free to make my own decisions and had just 2 choices, I’d choose Minnesota cold over Texas hot, yet I don’t know if I would go back there to live without the second house option for the purposes of escape. ;)

The weather was so warm this afternoon that i thought it was spring.  This ain't right.   We have trees blooming and if frost or snow hits us again before april..which it very likely will, there will be no fruit this summer on our trees.     I asked the guy to leave my window sashes that he removed this morning and i'm going to plant my onions, not all, just about 10 or so and put one sash over them held up by brick.  I saved my screens so i can block off some of my peppers from the deer.

I just looked at some long range forecasts and one of the local weatherman said there will be some 30s later on in the month.
