Tossing them in the trash means they end up in landfill and then leach into the soil and contaminate the groundwater.
Flushing them down the toilet contaminates lakes, rivers and streams and end up in your drinking water and the fish you eat.
It's not just your old medications it's hundreds of millions peoples' medications.
You'd already be on the list as having been prescribed the medications and you are worried about facial recognition when lawfully disposing of them? Put them in a bag and hand them over.
I honestly don't get this over the top paranoia.
I'm more worried about all the clorine they force us to drink when our water is already fine. All because one unlucky bastard got a brain eating ameoba from showering (that's right. Have to get water in your nose showering. Cant get it from drinking water).
I hate the idea of chlorine in drinking water as well but why add to it? Get a tank for drinking water. Why would you rather ingest someone else's antipsychotic meds, antibiotics, antidepressants willingly either by drinking them, showering in them or eating them?
I put all my old meds in a bag and take them to the local pharmacist for disposal and nobody has come to lock me up or kill me yet.
I'm surprised some of you ever leave your house. Lol.
Yes, it cost me extra to filter clorinated water that the government mandates and puts into our water.
And then charges me $3/month for chlorinated(they call it "safe drinking water fee") water.
Our water comes from deep aquifers. Im not worried about drugs making it doen there. Lol.
And all the sewage( modad treated) from the homes and camps goes into the lake. And it passes the quality test every time.
At one time, when i was a kid, there was a lot of untreated sewage that went directly from the toilet to the lake.
We swam and water skied and never got sick.
Had more fish back then too.
Do you still want raw sewage pumped into waterways just because you didn't get sick back then? I definitely do NOT!
I know someone who got gangrene from water skiing on a river. Luck of the draw.
Who says it passes the quality test? A government agency?

What I don't understand, after having read numerous links here, is how careless the government is with their protocol for advising the general public on how to dispose of their no longer needed meds.
"Flush them down the toilet?" Seriously? How many times have we heard those pba's shoved down our throats telling us what a careless, unthoughtful way that is to rid ourselves of heavy drugs that could cause any number of bad side-effects due to them tainting the public water supply?
FWIW, most pharmacies I've visited have a bin labeled with, "Drop your unwanted Rx's 'HERE." And that's the end of it.
I don't 'get' the bruhaha. Participate, or not. Totally your own choice. Where's the rub?

I wouldn't be in hard disagreement here, @Red Lily, if it weren't for the Rx companies telling you to do just that: flush your unused, unwanted meds down the sink or toilet. https://www.fda.gov/consumers/consumer-updates/where-and-how-dispose-unused-medicinesRed Lily wrote:Seriously?

As unconscionable as that might be, I don't see as how anyone is offering a better alternative.
Personally, I wish everyone would get off the, "We've got to save everyone from himself," bandwagon, and simply allow adults to make the proper decisions for themselves, w/o any interventions from Nanny Gov't.

We don't have pharmaceutical companies trying to influence us in any way and I'm grateful for that. NO tv ads or crap like that.
The general rule here is to dispose of them sensibly ie put them in a bag and drop them off at a pharmacy for disposal, which is what I do. I know people in the US do that as well. To tell people to flush them down the toilet or sink is extremely irresponsible imo.
