Re: Bad Weather!
Well, I didn't watch any Baton Rouge news or weather yesterday. I was watching the much superior weather coverage at KLFY in Lafayette.
Problem is , I'm on the fringes of their coverage as far as local news goes.
If I had tuned in to any BR station I could have confirmed last that I indeed did hear that tornado last night.
It sure did pass close! Prolly in the field behind the house.
Just 2 miles down the road, it stuck a massive mobile home park. Tore everything up. Destroyed several homes and flipped at least one for sure.
No one was injured I believe, as no one was home or had bugged out.
I'd like to post a link of the damage but not sure I want to give my exact location.
Why do tornados love trailer parks?

Re: Bad Weather!
I looked at a few more news sources. Some say tornado. Some say just strong, straight line winds. I tend to believe the former considering what I experienced.
Three people were inside those homes. Looked like a bomb hit them.
They were taken to area hospitals and all will be ok.

Re: Bad Weather!
The NWS(National Weather Service) has just confirmed that the tornado here was an EF-1.

Tornadoes...in N'Orleans.
Is that common, at all? I don't think I've ever heard of one, that close to the Gulf...

But there was a tornado there too.
We get lots of tornados here in cold front, squall lines.
Fortunately they are usually EF-O or EF-1 and usu ally not long track.
But there was one around lake Charles with this lin e that was EF-3 and tracked 18 miles.
I've been in 2 and had plenty close calls. I've seen some in the summer from large mesocyclothunderstorms and wall clouds.
I just don't like the night time ones.

Re: Bad Weather!
No. As a on-again-off-again resident of Tornado Alley (Ohio through to Oklahoma) I can attest. The night storms build while you sleep...when you went to bed with the moon smiling at you, by 0300 you hear the low rumble and windows blowing out.
And...yeah...in the Great Lakes, a thunderstorm can pop up at any time, day or night. I'd seen them form in early morning - only later did I learn that was unheard of elsewhere, where weather follows PATTERNS.
Yeah, the night storms are ugly. But they all are...I'll never forget, the first months on the railroad. I was called to work on a Sunday, as the "utility man" at Rockport Yard. Rockport was semi-abandoned; it was only used as an interchange yard, and had one yardmaster, working 8-6 weekdays. I was alone.
Three trains were coming in, and I was the guy to prep the switches and help cutting the train to fit. That's the "utility' in Utility Man - do whatever it is the crews need. Cut their trains; wind down the car brakes; get them coffee (kidding).
I'm there, and the sky looks like hell, and then a train blasting up the grade from the river drawbridge, calls me.
"Hey there, utility. Find a safe place - there's a tornado headed right your way."
There was no safe place. I was in a rail yard with interstates on three sides, and a business district on the fourth. Nearly everything was closed for the weekend (July 4th holiday). The tower/office/crew room had a basement...padlocked. No locomotive in the yard that I could sit in.
I got in the men's room inside the crew room (no windows) and waited. Apparently the tornado never touched down, at least not in city limits.

Re: Bad Weather!
I would not want to be anywhere near a large tornado.

Ever see those tornado-chaser vids on Eww Toob?
If the viewer appreciate what they show, they'll scare him silly. If you don't...the collapsing and uplifted buildings and autos and flotsam, look like computer special effects.
Fortunately for me, Cleveland was never hit with a major tornado in the times that I lived there. Other years, yes. Occasionally one would briefly touch down, causing minor damage; but the real tornado action happens over the Continental Divide, heading south of Akron. Zanesville was extensively damaged in 1973. There'd been a lot of farming villages hit, over the years. And of course the ones that touch down in the country, never hitting structures or power lines.
