Nope.

There's a Eww Toob channel...What's Going On With Shipping. Sal, the owner, was a merchant mariner at one time...he holds a second mate's "unlimited" license still, and he is an instructor at the State University of New York's maritime college.
He's gone on step-by-step as to how the event happened. Power failure at the worst possible time.
Since he did his two vids, explaining it, it comes out: In port, for 48 hours, the ship was having electrical problems. Power had failed twice, with general blackouts on the ship. Now, according to what I'd read, it's not customary for these ships to plug into shore power just to load - they keep their generator or main diesel running and powering everything.
So the ship's officers KNEW there was issues; but they didn't summon any shore contractors, and opted to head out to sea with only what repairs (or none) they could make.
Because time is money, and money talks. It told this crew, get moving.

HawkTheSlayer wrote:The main problem is, there were/are no protective barriers or bumbers if you will, around the riser(s) columns.
Every bridge , large or small, from the Mississippi River to the Intracoastal Waterway, has protective collision barriers built around every riser, in these parts.
You'll find no bridges without .
Sal at What's Going On With Shipping, addresses that. I guess in the maritime industry, those are called "dolphins" - and they became standard after a 1980 Florida incident where a barge brought a bridge down.
This bridge was put up in 1977, and was never upgraded.
