Re: Maryland Bridge Collapses
The main problem is, there were/are no protective barriers or bumbers if you will, around the riser(s) columns.
Every bridge , large or small, from the Mississippi River to the Intracoastal Waterway, has protective collision barriers built around every riser, in these parts.
You'll find no bridges without .

Maryland is a long way from here.
Dat's "dem" parts.
Not "deez" parts.

Even if there was , this ship was so massive it was never going to end well , newton's law of physic's was always going to knock it down , mass x acceleration ?

I believe that too. Even though he was dragging anchor, inertia and the tides were too great for the tower to survive a direct hit from a ship that massive. Even with concrete protective bumpers.vege57 wrote:HawkTheSlayer wrote:The main problem is, there were/are no protective barriers or bumbers if you will, around the riser(s) columns.

All supports like the one on this bridge should be fabricated from reinforced steel and concrete. Ive never seen such a poorly looking bridge.
But the gaurds just may have absorbed enough shock to keep the bridge from massive failure.
We'll never know.
It's fortunate the loss of life was small on such a heavily traveled bridge.

Anything is better than nothing , she went down like a deck of cards , I heard they had blocked entry to the bridge shortly before impact

I've never seen a bridge with out them either and that was the first thing I noticed when they showed the pics . Up here they put them mainly to break up ice flows on the Hudson but any waterway that has columns in the water usually has them as a buffer from the salt water ,freezing water and the occasional drunk boater that likes to run into them . I thought it was a standard construction practice but this things been up for quite a few years and it doesn't look like they were necessary . Unless its a low budget bridge and they got away with no footing island protectors thats should be common practice . Somethings very strange .
