I prefer old wooden houses that creak, move and breathe.

....and rot.

I want a house that will take care of me after I retire. I won't need to paint the outside, it will provide most of my electricity, it will be very pest resistant, and I like it. The huge porches are perfect for Texas heat and the shop will keep me entertained for the rest of my life. I have plans for storage, maintenance, future family expansion, and handicap accessibility.

My first encounter with a home of this sort was when i was in college and our equestrian instructor took us all to NC and we visited a home/barn connected.  The HOME right above the barn. IT was nice.  beautiful, well done, easy access to a full barn and riding and show horses below..very well kept.     I had told my son about this and he remembered it all his life.   And that is what he did. His goal is more like Crusaders. His lower level is part lower level of his home for more space and then he has a large area for big equipment storage and work area.

Yes, and rot, and need painting.
I'm not joking. That is what I love.
I buy tickets in the surf lifesaver raffles to 'win' one of those horrid concrete and glass things.
If I won one, I'ld sell it and buy an old wooden house. My wife would not live in one of those sterile things. I wouldn't.
You could put a floating wooden floor in it if you want, but it would not have the flaws of an old house.

yes. a good sudden wind will suck his metal offn his building and wrap it all around his trees. you want to blow out a portion of the house. not turn it into a gigantic sail.

Closed cell insulation will hold it together and muffle sound.

there's been no damage or loud weather noise in my son's home. I can't tell you how much he loves it.
