Jails in Brazil reduce the sentence of a prisoner for 4 days for every book they read and write a report on.

A win/win idea

jail is never a solution. either they got off light, or were willing to do the time served. and after they turn 62, they get out and collect $400 a week. which in some parts of this land, is plenty to live on.

I'm sorry, but jail serves its purpose of punishment and retribution for the victim(s). This is a fact that is apparent and almost always overlooked by liberals.

Yes, jail is a punishment. There has to be some punishment, some deterrent.

It costs an enormous amount and the recidivism rate is over 50%.
Many people are not caught again, they are just more careful.

If jail saves just one person (particularly a child) from being abused, raped or murdered by a psychopath then it serves its purpose.

even if the nation spends on average $18,000 per year per inmate. doesnt matter the cost, the jailers have morality ln their side. sorry. the tide turned when the prison system mandated that individual cell blocks be given to their respective gang. yeah. didnt know that did you Red. its segregated. bloods here, crips there, mongols there, aryan brotherhood with local bloods, its just a big happy countryclub.

I don't see what that has to do with anything but I'm not going to falter in my belief that we absolutely need prisons, especially for violent psycopaths, just because gangs are segregated.

Jail isn't meant to be a deterrent. If it has that side effect, great, but the purpose of a jail is a place to put people who owe society for having wronged society.
