Re: Homemade wine
Yes, it's that easy. If you don't mind if it isn't top shelf. I knew a few people who made wine, and it was a far more involved process. Such as, starting w/wild plums this guy picked himself. Pretty good, and had quite the kick to it!Calypso Jones wrote:LOL online. Any advice would be MOST appreciated.

But what the heck, give it a shot. Sounds fun. Just don't do like I did, and forget the jug's in the cabinet until you hear this explosion.

Yep. Kahploohey! My boyfriend and I were making some in a milk jug or three - so long ago, I forget. We didn't use one of those airlocks - didn't know about 'em. Then we kinda forgot to keep letting the excess air out of the bottle(s), and they exploded.Calypso Jones wrote:oh wow. Explosion???
What a sticky mess! Good thing the cabinet was otherwise empty. lol.
Oops, forgot to add; they were plastic milk jugs.

I brew my own beer and assume wine is similar.
It's not what I would call easy. Everything has to be sanatised. Need and airlock.
Temperature has to be controlled when brewing. 20 --> 22 degrees C for a normal ale. So 68 --> 72 degrees F .
At times you have to cool it, at times heat it. Very gently.

Explosions happen when it is bottled before it has finished fermenting.
A Specific Gravity Hydrometer can tell you when fermenting has finished.

A good site

......... Fill the airlock with a neutral solution (preferably sulphite) or water and insert the airlock and bung into the carboy neck opening.
4. Leave the carboy at a temperature between 75-80°F (21–24°C) for a further 18-20 days to finish fermentation. After 18 days, check the Specific Gravity. You should get a reading of 1.000 or less. If the Specific Gravity is above 1.000 allow a few more days of fermentation and then check the Specific Gravity again. To make a sweet wine add a commercially prepared Wine Sweetener & Conditioner to your wine just prior to bottling. ...........
