After a couple of close calls where she swallowed open safety pins and glass shards, she is in a therapeutic facility where she is getting something called Equine Therapy. It's horses right? What can horses do with a girl so seriously mentally ill? Has anyone ever heard of this? Does it work with the destructive and suicidal? This can't be a regular hospital. Her mom and grandmother are asking me like I know. We aren't allowed to seen her. No one is.
I've heard of equine therapy. The idea is to get the patient interested in something else; and many young people, especially females, have an affinity to horses. It's to create a whole nother set of priorities and habits. It could be anything, but horsemanship is all-encompassing. Horses' needs are endless. Fed twice a day, taken out for exercise; brushed, muck shoveled out...just owning a horse, is more work than a paying job.
It could be something else as involving, but a horse is seen as a pleasant animal - and who doesn't like riding a horse on a sunny afternoon?
The not-allowing-parents-or-guardians in, is a red flag. But I don't know enough about mental hospitals to know if that's common or if it's legal.

I thank everyone who has provided information. This case is in Arizona which makes equine therapy easier and more available. The court overseeing this case has hearings every six weeks and the Judge renews the no contact order every time for all five children. Mom and Dad are trying to cooperate with their own therapy and parenting classes. I don't think it will do any good. These kids, I expect, will be gone forever. There is already a hearing in September that would release the middle and youngest girls for adoption.

I really DON'T get this crap where hospitals won't let family/friends come to visit patients. People have known for centuries that having people around who care about you is a great benefit for healing too....

yes but there seems to be some problem with the parent's parenting style. Some people are just toxic.
