Shoes Made From Coffee Grounds and Recycled Plastic Bottles Are Not Only Waterproof But Super Comfy

Your morning coffee could be used to make a pair of sneakers, a Finnish startup reveals. Rens makes new kicks from old coffee, cutting back on waste in terms of space in landfills and methane emissions.

5,000 backers pledged over $500,000 to see the sneaker come to life, which uses up 21 cups of coffee and 6 recycled plastic bottles in each pair of shoes.

Rens come in 9 different colors, and are waterproof and super comfy. Furthermore, the shoes absorb odors, and they are designed to be slipped off and on easily.

Jesse Tran, the co-founder of Rens, wanted to do something to help reduce peoples’ carbon ‘footprint,’ while offering an everyday shoe that is functional and fashion-forward.

“As environmental awareness increases, so too does knowledge of the circular economy. Shoes made from recycled coffee grounds may seem novel to some, but we wholeheartedly believe that this is just the beginning of a revolution in garment technology and manufacturing,” said Tran.

There's a Narrative coming here, and it's got a central theme that I'm not liking one bit.

So, iow, don't expect your new, $118 shoes to last too long.  lol.

I wonder how much MORE water and other natural resources are being used to create shoes from coffee grounds and plastic than would otherwise be used to create, well, far superior LEATHER shoes.  Or even plastic ones, for that matter.  They sure wouldn't cost $120.  
Even Walking Cradles only cost $79 - $95.

Shoes, like other clothing items...have grotesquely fallen in quality.

The Chinafication of the nation.  It's amazing to me, how the one industrialized nation that CAN NOT make quality products, for itself, for export...is the nation we wind up buying nearly 100 percent of our consumer needs from.

I remember the 1960s, and the not-so-high quality goods American companies were making.  Into this world came Japanese items...at first, cheap toys; and then, cheap-but-superior electronics items.  I remember a little Sony radio that Esso/Standard Oil of New Jersey, was giving out to important industrial customers.  My old man, a chemical engineer, had moved into industrial sales and had a case of those to give to his important customers.  It was only AM, but FM in those years was still little more than a novelty...most FM stations played elevator music back then.  That's what it was used for - before Musak became widespread in businesses. But, amazing quality - good reception; good speaker; it held up. A great table radio...three AA batteries.

Anyway...low-cost, superior, well-built televisions and tape recorders and some kitchen appliances...to bicycles, and then the auto industry wiped us out.  Such was our appetite, back then, for quality products.

Now we seem to have gone the opposite, at a frantic pace.  Maybe not that we CRAVE shoddy crap, but we're SETTLING for it.  Nothing else can be found.

At 119 a pair, I'll recycle $85 by purchasing Crocs
