No matter what the American Cancer Society says, I've an inkling that this may be more karma related than anything.

Yup - trying the sympathetic avenue usually begets forgiveness . "Karma" isn't the proper term to use, because she hasn't died and been reincarnated yet. It has to do with how one's actions in their current life determine what they become their next life.
