It was explained in the Federalist Papers.

The point was, the Executive (and Senators) was/were NOT to be directly elected.  The States were to choose prominent informed persons to represent each State in the Electoral College ("college" meaning, in the jargon of the era, a meeting of learned minds for debate).  They were to pick.

Direct election of Electors is a travesty.  But it still preserves one aspect as intended - balance GEOGRAPHIC weight (States as entities) against POPULATION weight.

Direct election, first would have New York and Los Angeles dictate terms to the rest of the nation.  Imagine THAT - given the chaos and dysfunction of both cities.

Second, it will be 51 percent voting to run roughshod over the 49 percent.  And as city/country gets moar and moar divergent - violence versus lawfulness, lack of skills versus plethora of skills; tax-consumers versus tax-PAYERS.

That puts us on an inevitable course to open civil war.
