RV wrote:Rather than pay some corporation your hard earned money for a so-called "diet". I would recommend just eating less/no "candy", eat more vegetables and fruits, drink LOTS more water and less meat. Filling up on water means there is less room for sweets, desserts, etc.
I would also recommend watching how many fried foods one eats as well. Many, many "fast foods" are deep fat fried and add greatly to cholesterol!
I lost 40 - 50 Lbs. doing this several years ago and haven't put the weight back on through the years. I still watch what I eat, have learned to love fruits and vegetables and drink 60 - 100 ounces of filtered water each day.
Drinking water is very important.

I fasted from 7pm tuesday nite to 2pm wednesday afternoon and i still wasn't hungry. Americans eat way too much. I did some praying along with it but that wasnt my total intent. Blood work.
We are sooooo BLESSED but we should not take advantage of it.

I wouldn't mind getting a hold of that study re: milk & cholesterol. I read parts of such a study this a.m., but it centered mostly on cholesterol in milk and genetics; iow, what your particular body will and won't absorb.Casey Jones wrote:2cent wrote:And I do mean stupid.
This started w/the doc thinking my leg probs may be arterial rather than muscular, so I decided to see what I might be able to do diet-wise to improve matters.
I end up at CATO Institute - an embedded link from, IIRC, the American Medical Ass.(es) Basically, a low-cholesterol diet.
First they give a list of good sources of protein: (partly) MILK, and other dairy products.
Out the other side of their mouths, they say to AVOID saturated fats: (which include) MILK, butter cheese, ...
Yeah, they probably mean to drink watered down milk, but, If God wanted us drinking that 2% slop, he'd have delivered 2% cows.
Same goes for butter. If God wanted us eating margarine, (barf), cows would be expressing oil from their utters.
Next up:
Grains. A great source of grains, they say, is crackers.
But AVOID foods = high saturated fats. Which you'll find in ...you guessed it ...CRACKERS!
There's more, but I'll spare you. Me thinks those PEOPLE are crackers. But you knew all that. Just sharing a bit of frustration, and I bet you've had your share of "diets," yourselves.
In the famous words of Ronaldus Magnus: 9 scariest words: "We're from the government, and we're here to help."
I came across a study: Switching to 2% milk, INCREASED cholesterol and issues. Those reversed with patients who switched back to whole milk.
Back in Wisconsin, I had a physician who was up on this stuff. We were talking about losing weight...he stressed, "Fat doesn't make you fat. Carbohydrates make you fat. Inactivity makes you fat. Cut the sugar and carbs first - and do what you can to JUST MOVE."
IAC, I've always been of the opinion that these so-called "dieticians" don't have much of a clue of what they speak. Not only do they change their minds every other day, they rarely agree w/one another, and can even contradict themselves in the very same study.
Come to think of it, I don't even know what my cholesterol rate is.

You couldn't be any more right, if you tried.Calypso Jones wrote:I cut my cholesterol down under 200 just by giving up coffee for a year. For some reason i lost my taste for it and there it was at the end of the year. One thing though i do have very good HDL. Doctors really don't know all that much about cholesterol.

Re: Stupid Diets
Can you call your doctors office and ask them what your cholesterol was ....LDL and HDL was last bloodwork.
did you know that everytime you have bloodwork they leave scartissue damage. If they continuously take from the same spot...it can cause worse damage.

I've an appt. on May 3rd. I'll ask then. FWIW, they only take blood once a year, so I don't think there's much damage.Calypso Jones wrote:Can you call your doctors office and ask them what your cholesterol was ....LDL and HDL was last bloodwork.

Heart rate, b/p, and all that is on my paperwork. Didn't occur to this airhead to look for the cholesterol level. ewpsie. lol. Well, at least I'm here to tell about it.Calypso Jones wrote:LOL i'l find out next week...and i ALWAYS ask for a copy of the results.
Oh, I'd love for you to see the DASH diet my pcp prescribed. Tasteless, while being so much food it'd be imPOSSible to fit it all in in a day.
One example:
Breakfast
1 store-bought (commercial) whole-wheat bagel with 2 tablespoons peanut butter (no salt added)
1 medium orange
1 cup fat-free milk
Decaffeinated coffee
Lunch
Spinach salad made with:
4 cups of fresh spinach leaves
1 sliced pear
1/2 cup canned mandarin orange sections
1/3 cup slivered almonds
2 tablespoons red wine vinaigrette
12 reduced-sodium wheat crackers
1 cup fat-free milk
Dinner
Herb-crusted baked cod, 3 ounces cooked (about 4 ounces raw)
1/2 cup brown rice pilaf with vegetables
1/2 cup fresh green beans, steamed
1 small sourdough roll
2 teaspoons olive oil
1 cup fresh berries with chopped mint
Herbal iced tea
Snack (anytime)
1 cup fat-free, low-calorie yogurt
4 vanilla wafers
Who would ever seriously EAT that slop?! Certainly not any doc I've run into.
Oh - JIC you want some more examples:
