Balsa wood is a hardwood.

hardwood trees are classified as that due to the structure of their seeds.
Hardwood trees flower. Softwood trees do not.
That is a most interesting statement.
I thought hardwood trees shed their leaves, while "softwood" do not. I would consider "pine cones" seeds. In the American South we have these "long needle pine trees and loblollys. Difficult to tell them apart. When they are young loblolly look like pyramid pine trees while southern long needle look like grass. Going by that we have Loblolly in P.R. they seem to thrive near the beaches. Not so much inland. These guys have thousands of small pine cones less than 1/2 inch in diameter. And wow do they have pollen!! it is like a fog for several weeks. And coats everything.
As you know far more about wood than I and woodworking than I ever will, let us know your thoughts.
As for my wood working, I have finally been able to saw in a straight line for almost 2 feet. Bill Cosby said it best "I make decorative firewood"!!!

I didnt realize that . I always thought the difference was because of the density of the wood and naturally the physical "hardness" . Now I'm enlightened - thanks

That is exactly what I thought. Of course a 'hardwood' tree would give hard wood. You don't even have to think about it!

The nice thing about this information is .............. when you are driving along with a passenger in a car and you see a tree in flower 100 M away when you are driving at 80 km/h, you can say to your passenger 'Isn't that a lovely hardwood tree?'
:-)

I have heard that Hardwood trees are deciduous. I have ALSO heard ALL trees are deciduous, it's just some lose all their leaves at the same time, so it is more apparent. Other trees lose leaves continually.
I am not sure about the deciduous leave being hardwoods. I am sure on the seed structure coming from a flower.
Sorry, I misphrased myself there. The seed structure for a hardwood tree comes only from a flower.
hardwood trees flower, then make seeds. softwood trees do not flower, even if they make seeds.

We have similar sort of pine trees here, but no pollen :-(

Sawing wood in a straight line is very good. You have done well.
When I use the electric saw I usually clamp a guide on my workpiece to keep the saw straight.

Here is a poem I wrote about trees

The Piccabeen People

Anchored in the earth.
Huge knuckles burrow deeply.
Soft yielding soil is leaf strewn.

We walk at your feet.
Giving shelter, comfort, solace
You wave from above, swaying.

Hundreds of feet up, straight up.
Miles of timber are loftily supported.

Your shining white arms reach up to the skies.
Flourishing with a wreath of flowers, leaves, food.
Gifts of beauty float down as seasons pass.

Graceful Magnificance
Elegant Majesty

this silly bullshit theory that trees as a collective have the same voice is laughable. even trees amoungst the same speices is retarded. the only tree that is communicable with between human and tree is Mother Willow. the rest are individualy attempting to shade out everything else. the willow allows others to grow near it, provided they do not attempt to drink too much water. tree hugger. just another word for communistic retard who buys into equality while wishing to avoid the obvious king of the hill mentality.

............. Julia Butterfly Hill lived for 738 days, from December 1997 to December 1999, in the canopy of a giant 1500 year old redwood tree named Luna. She ended her revolutionary action when an agreement was made with Pacific Lumber Company to spare the tree and a 200 foot buffer zone surrounding the tree. .................

............. Julia endured one of the harshest El Nino storms, was harassed by helicopters and threatened by loggers who were felling trees around her and even received death threats. Most of the time she was wet and cold and sometimes the "discomfort and fear left her sobbing in the fetal position." ..........

............ She received strength from the wisdom of the tree, she said. The bond that developed between Julia and Luna must have been profound. There is no doubt she loved the tree.

She marks her life simply: before tree, during tree and after tree. ...............
