Opened in 1923, and after 99 years and 4 generations in business, Cannatella's Grocery in Melville will be closeing it's doors at the end of June.

Much more than just a grocery, it was a bakery, fishing supply house, hardware store.
Just a full service center. Or what used to be known as a general store.

Fine people with a work ethic.
I'll try to find as much video as I can but they do have a Facebook page.

That's really sad but it must be almost impossible to keep a business afloat and feed your family in a town of just 700.

I don't know how they survived the last 10 years.

My family was in the grocery business for 73 years(1931-2004) and 3 generations.

We were supplied by the same large grocery co-op and would chat at the stockholders meeting, etc.

Before Bobby Jindal closed the ferry crossing the Atchafalaya river to and from Melville, we used to have a Sunday ride over there on occasion.

After the ferry closed, you either had to go north through simmesport and then back south again to get there. Or had to go south to Krotz Springs and then north to get to Melville. It became too far to travel.
