My ex and I used to dance a bit like that. I LOVE dancing!Red Lily wrote:Dancing looked cool in the 40s.
You should've seen us at a wedding.
Back story. Julie was this girl my ex was dating when we met. They broke up. She came here, after I was remarried w/my ex and crew. Crew had to take their sick kid to the Urgent Care Center, so Julie and I sat outside getting drunk together. So I says to her, "I was nothing but a major interruption to your life."
Her: "Nope. Things went well for me. I like how it turned out."
Fast forward many more years. I went to MI to see my college kids, now living w/Ex. Julie's daughter was getting married. I got invited to the reception.
Mr. Ex and I boogied our bones off dancing to ...R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
'Retha, baby! Bring it on!
Laugh? We had the time of our lives, knowing that everyone in the room (all of his old classmates and buddies), was wondering what the heck was going on with that.
Nothing, really. We were just enjoying dancing. It'd been a long time. And boy howdy, he can dance. He could make anyone
w/two left feet look like the queen of the ballroom. What was more fun, is it just happens that I can dance, too, so we just rocked it out, and let everyone think what they would.
Dang, if that wasn't fun.
My kids were there to see it. I kinda liked that. And they inherited our 'talent', (for lack of a better word.) They're 16 months apart, and very close. When they were kids, they'd make up these dance routines on their roller blades, and show them off in our utility room. (Large; about 12x16 w/a concrete floor). My daughter would slide through his legs; they'd flip around and do all kinds of cool stuff.
But then, my parents were quite the ballroom dancers, themselves.
Pardon me. Sweet memories. Sharing. Why not? :)

Thanks. Little doubt that there were jaws dropping all over the room. lol. The irony to "R-E-S-P-C-T, see just what it means to me," was hilarious. (I took it as an inside joke.) It really was a blast.Red Lily wrote:Good happy memories they are too, 2!

My mother had a hat for ALL occasions! ;o)) She sent me to "Wendy Ward School", for those who don't remember or never heard of it, it was a sort of "finishing school" for girls held in the Montgomery Ward stores. They taught girls to be lady-like. Not to go out in public with curlers in their hair, or at least cover them. Don't chew gum in public. How to behave on a date, always let the young man open and close the door for you when he picked you up and when you got to your destination. Taught you correct posture and how to walk. At that time, I had a pair of fishnet stocking in every color available ;o)) After mom died a few years ago, and I started the huge task of cleaning out closets, I found she'd saved things like my candy striper uniform, the beads from when I was a CampFire Girl, my favorite little purse with a fuzzy poodle on it from when I was a little girl (which I hung on the wall after I moved). I always kinda' wished I could have lived in the poodle skirt days ;o))))
It is amazing, as in mind-boggling.
I'd like to see some form of self-policing and accountability brought back into society. This idea that someone else is responsible for your safety, health, etc. has gotten way out of hand. When natural consequences for actions becomes a reality again, people will put more thought into what might actually happen to them in various circumstances. They'd adjust themselves accordingly.
My mom and dad - and likely many of your parents - grew up in that era. It quite possible that their wholesomeness grew out of getting through the Great Depression with as much dignity as possible. The styles for ladies were fabulous!
Lucky me! My mom saved all her clothes, and guess whose blazers and jackets fit me perfectly in high school?! Yeah, I had it made - all right out of the attic. (Well, not all, but you get the drift.)
Btw, I thought the evening wear for that era was kinda ugly. But the fitted suits and coats with shoulder pads? They were made to flatter any figure. And again, people minded their p's and q's. There were consequences for those who didn't.
They knew shame.

sorta off topic slightly.... but i was thinking this morning in light of the domestic terrorism going on by antifa/blm... if cops had started shooting these folk...a few well placed rounds woulda stopped this crap. You don't get to attack a cop with a soup can or brick or water bottles and not get a shot. DO you?

I think some cities still have what I believe they call Officer/Citizen Review Boards. When something serious happens, a mixture of officers and citizens review the circumstances and determine what the outcome should be. Only problem is...so many people have been indoctrinated with politically correct BS, not sure if most citizens these days are capable of discernment. A 16-year-old is no longer a CHILD. They CAN, and in most cases should be accountable as an adult. I can't believe how many vicious crimes I've read about lately committed by 12, 13, 14, and 15 year olds. Like the one where 2 girls recently killed an uber driver, and one was just concerned about whether she could get her cell phone back. Then the judge released them back to the custody of their parents. Even though these kids are out at like 2:30am. WHY are children out running around at 2:30AM? Mom and dad obviously weren't watching them before, why would the judge release the kids back to them? WTH?

From @Elizabeth Theus
I think they were at the tail of the poodle skirt days. Closest I got was this dress I had in kindergarten. Black gingham w/a wide skirt. It had a red pinafore w/a matching black gingham poodle in the left-hand corner.
You must've been so touched when you found the treasured memories your mom had saved over the years. Cute idea what you did w/your purse.
Nope, never heard of "Wendy Ward School," and am unsure if I should say "lucky you," or "Poor you." I do remember my older sisters complaining loudly about their gosh-awful gym suits, and being made to walk in circles w/books on their heads. My mother had a hat for ALL occasions! ;o)) She sent me to "Wendy Ward School", for those who don't remember or never heard of it, it was a sort of "finishing school" for girls held in the Montgomery Ward stores. Which is what many of us thought right from the get-go. Problem was, they'd lose their jobs if they acted according to what would be the proper way to handle such instances. The mayors who ordered "stand-downs" have a LOT to answer for.Calypso Jones wrote:sorta off topic slightly.... but i was thinking this morning in light of the domestic terrorism going on by antifa/blm... if cops had started shooting these folk...a few well placed rounds woulda stopped this crap. I am stunned by how coarse society has become. They have absolutely zero capacity for appreciating the sanctity of LIFE. They have no conscience, there's no such thing as "good and bad" anymore. At least not for them, there isn't.Elizabeth Theus wrote:I think some cities still have what I believe they call Officer/Citizen Review Boards. And that judge handing a teen back to parents who allowed the miscreant to go carousing in the middle of the night needs to have his head examined.
Then again, when I was in the 8th grade, my 2 girlfriends and I would sneak out at night and "ditch cars." By that, I mean we'd pick a destination to get to and back, w/o getting caught. Any time we heard a car coming we then run for cover, ("Ditch it!"), so as not to get caught. Then go back home.
Didn't break or hurt anything. It wouldn't have occurred to us.
I eventually got busted. I got lazy, and didn't put the rope ladder I'd made between the mattress and box spring. Then mom vacuumed. Whoops! Odd thing is, I didn't get in trouble. But it was definitely the end of my galavanting! lol

Sounds kinda' familiar. I used to climb out my bedroom window over the garage, jump down to a lower place at the entrance of the garage, and then jump to the ground. A bunch of us would just wander around the neighborhood. It would NEVER occur to us to vandalize someone's property or hurt someone we might come across. But mostly, if a car was coming, we'd hide in case it was a cop car, cause they would have taken us home, gotten our parents up, and then we'd be grounded. About the only "bad" type of thing we'd do was like: One time there was a guy in our neighborhood that all us girls had a crush on. But, he wouldn't hardly even talk to any of us, was just always primping his car. So we took some chalk, made an outline around his car and wrote "Reserve for Daryl, jerk & car just married". It really pissed his mom off... ;o))
