Re: On This Day in History II
On the night of June 1, 2001 the Nepalese royal family was all but wiped out in a terrible shooting massacre.
The murders were committed by the Crown Prince Dipendra Bir Bikram Shah (far left).
A drunk Dipendra ambushed his family during a dinner party and unleashed a hail of bullets that would transform the small country.
Nine people including his mother and father, King Birendra and Queen Aishwarya, were killed.
Dipendra then shot himself, slipped into a coma and was declared brain dead soon after being crowned monarch.
His uncle, Prince Gyanendra, then ascended the throne.
A disagreement is said to have sparked the massacre, with tensions flaring after Dipendra's parents objected to his plans to marry a local aristocrat.
In 2008, the 240 year-old monarchy was formally abolished.

June 26
On June 26, 1975, two FBI agents were executed after a shootout at the Pine Ridge reservation, following a period of growing conflict between the government and US First Nations activists.
Jack Coler and Ronald Williams had been following a car on the reservation when its occupants began shooting at them, leaving Coler's car (pictured) riddled with bullets.
The two agents had been seeking a suspected thief. They died in the opening minutes of the exchange of gunfire.
American Indian Movement activist Joe Stuntz was killed by police during the response to the shooting.
Three men were arrested over the deaths, but ultimately only Leonard Peltier (pictured below) was convicted. He was sentenced to two life sentences and remains in jail.
