the deal was, whoever broke their respective siege first, was to become general of all western forces. so had port hudson thrown in the towel, first, Banks wouldve been the general major screwwup who commanded all the federal forces until england and france sent troops to help us convince the north to stop attacking us.

I used to dip shad on the west bank there from 5 in the morning to 3 pm when I'd leave to sell my catch. I had claimed an awesome "point" there before they "improved" the Mississippi River there by dozing the ledge that stuck out into the river and laying concrete Mat.

It was a deep point with many stepped, ledges. You never knew which the shad were running on so you had to have a 14 foot pole instead of a 12 and many times bend over to get 2 feet deeper where they were running. And a 40 inch wire hoop(1/4 inch stainless hoop) with a nylon mesh bag. Do that 10 hours a day! Those shad are huge in the Mississippi.  Each one could weigh 3lbs are more. Try lifting three or 4 like that at a time out of the water high over you head , and flipping them into the boat hundreds of times a day from the end of a 14 foot pole . You aint got no leverage there. You smile! All money
Sometimes they'd run deep.  Sometimes shallow all in the same day. God was good when they ran shallow. Lol.

Couldn't dip across the river or downstream on the east bank(Port Hudson side) . GP has a paper mill there. Nasty stuff comes out of those pipes!

Actually they go up the red/Atchafalaya chute, upcurrent , trying  to get into the Mississippi River at 3-Rivers/Old River Control Structure and the Auxiliary Structure. And many spill over down current through the locks from the MISSISSIPPI and try to return up current. But either set of gates may be shut down, but not both, to maintain the federally mandated flow of 30% of the MISSISSIPPI river's flow into the Atchafalaya river and flood basin. Or they could be using both in tandem during low water. But the flow and therefore the current will be minimal. Not enough to swing a pole down current. Need lots of current.

But about a mile above the Control Structure is The Sidney Murray Hydro Electric plant which produce the most reliable,  most expensive, guaranteed,  power in the nation! Lol. It uses miss river water discharged into the red river and downstream in to Atchafalaya.

That's where you wanna set up! In the discharge channel behind the turbines.  Steady flow. Shad and Slickers galore. Many miles from the Hudson site and another river but all in the same county.

You can check out the the 3 chutes on non Google maps.
