John identifies himself and his location and what he was doing at the time of this revelation from Christ.

What was he up to ?

It was the time of his daily prayers and he was visited by an angel of the LORD. I don't think it was Christ himself. God gave the revelation to Christ and Christ gave it to an angel to explain it to John. John does not know if he was taken places in Dreams or if his body actually went to heaven to the throne of God.

@veg57 John was an old man in his nineties exiled on the island of patmos for teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ. God gave this revelation to Jesus and Jesus gave it to an angel to deliver to John for John to write it down and deliver to the angel (that is not an actual angel in this instance but the pastor or head guy at each of the churches. The letters would have been read in each church to all those who would listen.

These are the churches of the book of Revelation and i wanted to just acquaint any reader with the spiritual, financial, governmental situation in each of these cities to a small degree.

all these cities had history of heathen worship.

I had a revelation today. My mom came over and asked me if I had any tomatoes. I could not lie. I gave her the first 5, I just picked.
Now my lustful, tomato salad ways will be delayed for at least a week.

Note: I'm gunna move the topic out of here into religion.

With all due respect, I am always blessed when I read God's word, regardless of what book it is. It is always an encouragement, an example and a rock to cling to. I find the book of Revelation the same way. Life is difficult and God's word is always uplifting and something to look forward to. Interestingly enough, every time I read a passage of scripture regardless of how many times I have read it before, I get something new out of it.

Chapter 1

Vision of the Son of Man

9 I, John, am your brother and your partner in suffering and in God’s Kingdom and in the patient endurance to which Jesus calls us. I was exiled to the island of Patmos for preaching the word of God and for my testimony about Jesus.

10 It was the Lord’s Day, and I was worshiping in the Spirit.[f] Suddenly, I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet blast.

11 It said, “Write in a book[g] everything you see, and send it to the seven churches in the cities of Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.”

12 When I turned to see who was speaking to me, I saw seven gold lampstands.

13 And standing in the middle of the lampstands was someone like the Son of Man.[h] He was wearing a long robe with a gold sash across his chest.

14 His head and his hair were white like wool, as white as snow. And his eyes were like flames of fire.

15 His feet were like polished bronze refined in a furnace, and his voice thundered like mighty ocean waves.

16 He held seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp two-edged sword came from his mouth. And his face was like the sun in all its brilliance.

17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as if I were dead. But he laid his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid! I am the First and the Last.

18 I am the living one. I died, but look—I am alive forever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and the grave.[i]

19 “Write down what you have seen—both the things that are now happening and the things that will happen.[j]

20 This is the meaning of the mystery of the seven stars you saw in my right hand and the seven gold lampstands: The seven stars are the angels[k] of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.
