Retirement Empty Retirement

Post by Sprintcyclist Fri Sep 24, 2021 9:52 am

My wife and I have been planning our retirement for some time.
I've started to do 4 day weeks, it is really good.

Any comments on retiring?

Retirement and its pluses and minuses depends on what type of life
you live and what finances you have and several other factors.
I once went to a retirement seminar.
One of the numerous points covered was that you shouldnt
retire and expect to go fishing every day.
Fisherman soon get tired of sitting on a jetty for six hours, getting
8 bites and 2 fish...hence they are reluctant to go back the next day...And then theres the weather...or if a boat is used..the motor wont start....
Everyone is different...
Retirement creates a lifetime of leisure, assuming youre in good health.
Unfortunately, its sometimes difficult to fill in an eight hour day where
you once were at work, with other activities which take up eight hours.
If I had my time over again, I would have perhaps attempted to
continue to work maybe 2 or 3 days per week part time and gradually
reduce those hours.
However if youve had a gutful of going to work every day, you may be
very much looking forward to leaving that way of life behind you.
My advice would be to talk to many people about retirement.
Everyone will give you a different point of view...
Some people like to travel...some dont..some play golf..some fish...
You will feel much different about retirement at the age of 70 compared
to the age of 60..
A lot will depend on your habits, your personality, your lifestyle,
your family and your desire to remain active...
Retirement is very complex...

Thanks Billy.

I have spoken to many people about retiring.
Good comments have been 'You want at least 3 interests. In case one stops."
"There are a lot of hours to fill in in a day. Then you have the next day .'
"there are only so many games of golf you can play.'

Some people do not plan it, then dislike their retirement

A volunteer position would help. I do yoga and can restart Bridge.
Need 2 more 'things'.
My 4 day weeks are good.

Youre on the right track...
I would categorize retirement as living on plateaus...
Plateau 1 will be the first five years...
Plateau 2 will be the next five years...etc etc...
What you do in the first 5 years might not be as enjoyable
as the next 5 years as we all change our attitudes towards life
as we get older.
A mate of mine for example, retired and he and his wife went
fruit picking for five years..not sure of the reason...maybe needed
the money as his retirement funding may not have been sufficient.
I couldnt do that...no way...
Everyones different...
Another mate bought a lathe and starting wood turning...
I went horseriding and took up ballroom dancing for the
first five years..then spent the next 5 helping my son
put fences around his house, construct decking and laid turf etc...
Everyones diferent...
You'll sort it out...
My apologies for any offensive remarks I have made to you
over time...I might have had one too many tinnies....
You didnt deserve the vitriol....criticism..maybe..but not vitriol...

I forgive you Billy.
You have been in a most unpleasant situation for 18 months and counting, not of your making.

Good luck there.
