Why not just let them free range? Sprinkle some feed in the pen before nightfall and they learn to head back before dark. Then just shut the gate.

That's how I always did it when I was a kid living in town.
But out here something will get them. Free range is hawk and owl food.

And the hawks are arriving in full force for winter.

A minx had me cornered last week at the market. But I didn't bite. She was maybe 30.
I found her phone number on my receipt in the bag. Minx are persistent creatures when they are hungry. Razz
