If you have the acreage, the rolling chicken pen with laying boxes is by far the best set up. Little need for supplemental feed like laying pellets or scratch feed.

And good fertilizer too.

It is a good system , you dont let them over graze, just a little more work than a fixed pen , but better management, you could put a solar panel on top with a battery and motor and move it from the house with your cell phone Chicken Coop Design - Page 2 2343565045

He'd leave it in the field till they ate all the bugs, grass, and dug up the worms. Lol.
When he moved it the ground was bare.

He had some heavy gauge wire cause the coons would eat through the wire.
He also had some fold down grating on the outside.

After he moved, he would let the grating down on the ground.  It surrounded the entire pen and extended out about 2 feet.

That way the foxes and kiyotes couldn't dig their way in.

We dont have any crazy critters in NZ, The odd ferret , But have only ever seen 1,

We got otters, minks, skunks.
Everything eats chickens or eggs. Snoicks( snakes) too.
