Storing food Empty Storing food

I was getting peeved with berries that lasted less than a week in the fridge before they worsened.

Realising I was in a no-lose situation I put some berries in an airtight container in the fridge. Oxygen can age goods badly.
The berries lasted perfectly well.

Mushrooms, silverbeet, grapes, everything I have put in a sealed container in the fridge has lasted perfectly well for much longer then usual.

I dehydrate excess food. It costs a little more in the short run but saves freezer costs in the long run. Not to mention the space it saves!

Foods like onions, potatoes, peppers, green onions/shallots, parsely, herbs, tomatoes all do well .
They last forever in a mason jar. No vacuum neccessary.

If I run out of fresh, i know I have dried to back me up.

Over ripe bananas make excellent banana chips and are a healthy snack food.

have you noticed that food has a shorter shelf life than before 2020.   I think that is intentional. Produce in particular. Not only does costco have a short shelf life but the fruit in particular is not high quality. LOOK pretty..but it is hard and tasteless.

There's a banana joke in there.

It's because they pick them too early so they don't bruise during travel.  People don't like buying bruised fruit and thousands of hands maul fruit and vegies in the shop to test them and that results in waste.

They're picked green and then treated or gassed because people like perfect looking fruit.  Some are kept in cold storage because people want them all year round.

It's all been driven buy what people demand aesthetically.  Don't be so picky about how your fruit looks, buy from a farmer's market etc and you'll get a tastier product.

I want to build a solar dehydrator. I need to research existing plans, but I have a decent plan in my head. 5-6 ft tall with removable perforated trays, a glass front, sloped roof for a solar panel to run a small ventilation fan. Mounted on a pole so I can pivot it to face the Sun better. Texas weather should be perfect for it.

I went to a baby shower yesterday and they'd done a fruit art baby carriage thing and OMG the fruit was delicious.

I asked where she'd bought the fruit and she said from the fruit market. The strawberries were the best I've tasted in DECADES!

I'm not going to be so lazy with my shopping in future and stop doing it in one place. I'll take extra time and go to the markets for fruit and vegies.

There's a few gaps in the display because we'd started picking at the fruit before I took the pic Lol.
