Buffalo Blizzard-Cam?

WHERE is it? Buffalo, believe it or not, is a big city. Filled with unemployed gimmedatz, now; but the buildup of a hundred years ago, remains.

As with Cleveland, WHERE you are, is tied to how much snow. Eastern end of the city, is mostly out of the snow belt. The line from downtown, through Lackawanna and south to Hamburg, and then on to Angola and Irving and Dunkirk...that's where the snow tends to really dump.

Wanna know where I worked, 46 years ago?

https://www.chq.org/discover-chautauqua/explore-the-grounds-and-gardens/plaza-cam/

A resort town.  Which wasn't a town so much as a private retreat, with NGO status - as a government entity.

I can't link this; but it's a cam from the Colonnade Building, which was its version of City Hall.  The building straight across, is the Smith Library.  The snow-covered plaza is Bestor Plaza.

Named for Arthur Bestor, one of the founders/builders of the Institution.  Interestingly, his great-grandson, Bestor Cram, makes anti-American subversive movies out of Portland.  I met him, when I rented from his father, Ambrose Cram, 44 years ago.

The whole area is full of bluebloods, who've turned on their own country.

Chautauqua, remember, is where Salmon Rushdie got stabbed, this summer.  My, how it's changed...I'll never go back.

Footnote: That's fifty miles from Buffalo - right in the heart of winter hell, now. Interestingly, the power remains on.

the last time John Sloan escaped from the locals he grabbed a decrepid horse, yet managed to hide in a hollowed oak trunk laying in a lake. first time he fled he jumped the leap of faith. Gnadenhuttens wrath is powerfull karma

I'm in Pittsburgh. Cleveland is about 130 miles from here.
Interesting that there would be such a clear line. I didn't know that. Pgh is rarely dumped on. I think one year there was 3-4 feet, but usually just a few inches.

Merry Christmas, Casey.

The Paul Harvey story brings to mind my own small bird feeder. The story is very accurate in marveling at God's creatures. It's what I do too. I have about 6-8 or more species of birds that huddle at my feeder. I enjoy them a lot. I am undecided whether they shiver or not. I think maybe they do sometimes.

I'm probably messing up the ecosystem by feeding them, but it's very cold and I can't help but feel sorry for them. LOL.

That's the first joke I've ever heard you tell. Needs some honing.

Merry Christmas, Casey.

Thanks.

The snow pattern, is the peculiarity of Lake-Effect snow. East of downtown, is out of that mini-weather-system.

It's Lake Erie, which is diagonal, from Cleveland to Buffalo. West of Cleveland, the shore becomes east-west. And of course the lake ends at Niagara Falls.

My most-memorable time, of all time - and I lived in the area from 1976-81 and again from 1999 to 2008 - was, the Christmas 2001 blizzard, which dumped FOUR FEET - in six hours - in a line from Cheektowaga to Irving. I had just bought a house in the Town of Evans (township, in other states) and had a hard time getting home from work...and my roof almost collapsed from the weight of the snowfall. After a hellish day and a nightmarish drive home, I had to spend four hours shoveling snow off my roof, middle of the night.

Lake-Effect snow. Warm water off Lake Erie (or other lakes in other areas) and a Siberian air blast...cold air, warm water, condensation, and the landmass on the other side of the lake from the prevailing wind, just gets DUMPED ON.
