I prefer to run masking tape along both sides , you can set the width of the joint, and also press the silicon more deeply into it, Pull it off and you have a straight narrow bead

Re: Helpful Hints for Running Silicone
Those are good to know. I have a lot of caulking to do in my RV bathroom.
I've never tried the water trick before. I've tooled it with popsicle sticks or plastic edges, but it leaves that ghastly edge on both surfaces...that water spray apparently prevents.
Trying to save an open tube...often it's futile, since I don't use calk that much. But I'd taken to putting a disposable glove over the nozzle. I hadn't thought of using a hot-glue gun to re-seal it...that might just work.

But you don't try to save it for years.

My caulk gun has a cutter on it...has for years. yes. I paid a lot extra for it at the time. I am pretty proficient at caulking...if i say so myself. I use one of those tips that electricians use to stop the end of my gun from drying out. Or..there;s this little latex sock you can put on the end that i can get at Rocking R. That's a hardware store. You know Rocking R?
I like the extension idea for getting into hard to reach areas.
