If I ever get the chance to build my home. I will include a rainwater collection system for my water needs. For $5k I can never have another water bill. I will have to be responsible for maintenance, but Texans take pride in self reliance. For $15k i can provide my own electricity.

Self collected rain water is the best drinking water on the planet.

It doesn't leave spots on your car when you wash with it either. It doesn't leave calcium deposits in your water fixtures in the house and it's free. I read up on rain water collection when I was quarantining with covid last Summer. It's pretty simple. 1 inch of rainfall on 1000 square feet gives you 600 gallons of water. A 3000 square foot roof with 40 inches of rain (avg for my area) per year gives me 72000 gallons of water annually. The home will be 40x60 ft with a 10x60 porch along the side. I can also use the roof on the shop for more square feet. After storing it, all you need is a pump, a pressure tank, and a filter. 2500 gallon tanks can be bought at any Home Depot store for $1000 and I can get 10% off with my veterans discount. 3 or 4 storage tanks should hold me over until the next rain, even in drought conditions. Tank overflow will be diverted to the garden and distributed with a flex hose.
I have a friend who lives in the area I want to build. He told me today that he got 5 inches of rain this week. That would be 3000 gallons in one week.
