It doesn't mean the same thing in Mexico that it probably does here.

You're right. It was an error.

However, crucifixes also feature skull and bones at the bottom of the cross below Christ's feet.

It represents the dead not Resurrected.

Skull-and-bones represents death. On a bottle or package etc, poison. On a ship's flag, prepare to be boarded, robbed, plundered, raped and murdered.
