Highly Invasive Species Emerges, The Odd Warning That Comes With Them

Texas has experienced an invasion of hammerhead flatworms. According to the Texas Invasive Species Institute there have been hundreds of the worms reported, primarily in Southeastern Texas. Should you happen to find a hammerhead flatworm, the Institute has a warning for you: whatever you do, don’t cut it in half. If you do make that mistake, you can expect to find two hammerheads before long.

Invasive flatworms threaten Texas ecosystem

The hammerhead flatworm, which is classed as an invasive species in Texas, can grow to be nearly a foot in length. The name comes from the fact that their heads resemble those of hammerhead sharks.

Like most invasive species, the hammerhead flatworm can be extremely dangerous to the health of the invaded ecosystem. In this case the environmental harm comes from their preying on earthworms. A dearth of earthworms can do catastrophic damage to the affected habitat.

This is far from the only reason to be concerned about the invading flatworms. To digest their prey they create a neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin, which can poison pets if eaten and irritate skin if touched.

Fauci have anything to do with this? I was just wondering this morning. They're working it so they're killing chickens and turkeys, can't afford beef, swine flu is allegedly back and that leaves fish. Well....here. we. are. Now to put more restrictions and say...NO ONE CAN FISH cause there's turble stuff in the water. HEre. EAT Bill Gates new fish alternative made from the bodies of dead babies.

lol.  Fun thought, but the things eat up earthworms.  Bad idea.

Still, it wasn't hard to get a chuckle out of the author describing the hammerhead worm getting its name from resembling the hammerhead shark.

Apparently brought to the U.S. with horticultural plants; it has been regularly found in greenhouses since 1901 (Esser 1981). They were reported as being so plentiful in New Orleans that they were used as demonstration material in zoology classes (Dundee and Dundee 1963).

I used to use a small piece of stinky dreadlocks the barber at the jail used to give me. Catfish love it! And it stays on the hook!
