The official role of the VP is to handle special projects for the president and act as a "back up" should something happen to the president. He also acts as a tie breaker in a deadlocked Senate.

The role of the Vice President has evolved into an insurance policy.  Lately, the VP seems to be chosen as someone who will please his party's base, but terrify the opposing party.  That way, the president is less likely to be assassinated because they will be afraid of the damage the new President would do.

The last President to select a running mate who was closer to the center than themselves was Reagan, and he had to deal with assassination attempts.  Every VP since Bush 41 has been outside the candidate or so inept that they were laughed at as an idiot.

Pence - Trump
Harris - Biden

He is an Aussie with limited knowledge of American politics and values. He's being curious and I don't have a problem with it if he doesn't try to tell us how to run our government.
