I'm still making my own, but the whites aren't what you'd call bright.  Gonna try some of that.

I make my own powdered detergent too.   Do you use 20 mule team borax? washing soda? or fels-naptha soap??

this is my powdered detergent

for HE washers

1 cup grated fels naptha soap
1/2 cup washing soda
1/2 cup 20 mule team borax

Mix. store i airtight container or bag
For light/small loads 1T
For Normal 2T
Heavy Load 3T

cost per load....15cents...probably gone up now.

and clean walls with it too.    I didn't know they put it in food but i'm not surprised.

THIS is what concerns me. They put this stuff in our food but they demand it be taken out of detergents cause it is harmful to the environment. Now how does that make any sense?

Additional popular foods containing trisodium phosphate include lunch meat, ham, and other processed meats, rice syrup, canned soups, pizza dough, cake mixes, cheese sauces, and baked goods.

Almost any food requiring processing and freezing features this additive. Despite warnings from the EPA and CDC, the chemical is approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for food industry use.
