One transportation guy on the Ewe Toob...who's a commercial pilot in real life, I'd seen some of his comments about that exploding jet engines...he went into this. He's not a sailor but he has developed some sources.
And what he had sounded correct, in that he had details and specifics. He claims the ship was traversing the canal at 15 knots...an incredible speed in close quarters. His sources theorize that pressure at the bow and suction broadside and astern, created an unstable situation, and once the bulbous bow nosed into the side bank, the force of the speed buried it deeply and swung the stern around to ground on the other side of the canal.
Here's the 20-minute explanation...I find it cogent, rational, informed.
But, FIFTEEN KNOTS? Top speed for this barge is 23 knots! Most canals or channels I've taken a boat (fishing boat) through had FIVE MPH speed limits!
