I want to see Chautauqua Institution (where I worked for four years) in the fall again; I want to see the Adirondacks in full bloom.  And then, I want to close the books on it all.  The next time, after this fall, that I'm at my parents' grave site, will be when they're planting me beside them.
Paternal Grandmother went to the institute throughout the late 40's and 50's. (I'm related to the Miller of the Miller Bell Tower) We usually spent a few days each summer at Bemus Pt. Hotel Lenhart. There is a fellow on TPF who also went there, He also was a train engineer. You are correct Fall is beautiful. The only time that is equivalent in NYC are the first warm days in Spring when short skirts are in full bloom. Havent been back for at for 10 years. May take Grand Niece there at some future date. OTT, not the least bit interested

Ah. I figured, eventually, I'd find another person with ties to Chautauqua somewhere online.

The Miller Bell Tower is a signature landmark, for those who don't know. It sits out on a natural point on the shore...and a century ago, it was the steamboat dock. NYC visitors would ride the NY Central trains to Westfield (where Abe Lincoln met the girl who told him to grow a beard) and take the JW&NW interurban trains to Mayville. Then it was onboard the steamboats, to Chautauqua. Or, take the Erie Railroad to Jamestown, and then board a steamboat at the Landing...the operations center of the Great White Fleet, five lake steamers.

Side note: The last surviving steamboat still ran until 1957, and then was available for charters until 1963. That year the boat, the City of Jamestown, it was named...hit a submerged log in front of the Bemus Point dock, and sunk. It was refloated and went back to Jamestown on its own power, but the owner found his liability insurance cancelled. He was a local quarry man and didn't need the boat - he was operating it as a hobby - but the boat was then tied up, essentially abandoned, and finally stripped down to rebuild with steel, but the plan fell through.

Anyway. I lived in various places on the Grounds of the Institution, over the years...in a subdivided old house owned by the St. Elmo Hotel; and back in 2004-2008, in the Arcade Building, which had been converted to condominiums. Very inexpensive rent and very comfortable.

The Bell Tower chimes the hours, although I think they turn the chimes off in winter, now...but you can hear it from Bemus Point to Mayville. At three in the morning, it's an eerie sound.
