You can change only one letter to make a new word.   You can add one letter to the previous word, subtract a letter from the previous word OR just jumble the letters that are already there to make a new word but there should only be one change per turn.

ie eloping  >  legion.  I made another word by taking out the p.

Stoppings  >  pooping didn't quite fit the bill but I just ran with it cuz it happens so frequently Lol.

legion  >  legions I just added an s to make new words easier to come up with.

So  ...

Legion  >  legions

Not to be confused with the word association game where you say just whatever comes into your head when you see the last word.

legions.....add an r and it becomes Leg irons ?

i just searched it and i see leg irons and legirons.
