That'd be Nixon who signed that nat'l speed limit lunacy, but why quibble; they were both (supposedly) Republicans, so such a thing should've been unheard of, under their administration. But to think that the speed limit, of all things, was the biggest problem facing individuals' liberty at a time. Oh, to have such devastating problems.

Then held the states hostage of fed funding, if they refused to comply. The states should've called his bluff. I wonder why they didn't. As in, too chicken? Or, some other nefarious reason we were/are unaware of.
