We've forgotten the realities of war.

First reality is: War is the most idiotic of all human endeavors. So be sure it's a LAST resort, not the first.

Second reality is: You won't win wars by giving your life for your country. Not even by making the OTHER poor dumb bastard give HIS life for HIS country (to quote Gen. George Patton).

You win wars by removing the enemy populace's will to resist. You do THAT, by killing people and breaking things.

INDISCRIMINATELY. Costing the enemy as much as possible.

GENERATING AS MUCH FEAR AS POSSIBLE. When Sherman said "War is Hell" he wasn't complaining. He was explaining what he was doing - making war hell for the civilian population of Georgia.

That is how you win wars. Not the Fat-Vicky way, half-fighting, while wasting huge amounts of money.
