Gee, that's an ugly looking creature. Almost alienish.
It'ld take off quite a few fingers instantly by the looks of it.
Imagine if it bit your foot, walking beside it !!!!!!!!

They eat good, though.
And the meat commands a high price.
Snapping turtles are still fairly common. One crossed the yard last week. Loggerheads on the other hand are scarce.
A turtle like you see here is prolly 75-100 years old.
I think they are now protected or limited in harvest.
I had a camp neighbor down in the Atchafalaya Basin that caught a large one like you see here. He cleaned it and cut the head off and threw it in the garbage can instead of into the bayou.
The jaws are razor sharp and powerful. And quick!
They could snap the small end of a baseball bat in two.
Th next day he went digging on the garbage can for his knife.
The head bit his hand and cut 3 fingers clean off.
I sure miss him and his wife. He passed away.
He was a jovial chap.
When he came home from the hospital , I told him not to worry. It could be worse.
You could have put your eye out !
Plus he would now get a SS disability check.
