Here we go again.
The water is lower than ever. 4.5 feet above sea level at the Baton Rouge Gauge.
Salt water has been making its way upriver due to the very weak flow and current. It had advanced to just below NOLA. The USACOE has been barging in tens of millions of gallons of potable water every day to supplement the drinking water needs of towns that draw water from the river for municipal needs.
Corrosion of intake pipes is also a concern.
The Corps has built underwater dams to slow the northward intrusion of salt water, as salt water is heavier and travels below fresh water.
But the dams can only be built so high off the river bottom as to not impede ship and barge traffic.

The river is forecast to be 3.8-3.9 feet in 2 weeks.
