Lighter Fluid and BBQ

Use a chimney starter.
It is just a description of my own actions.
A 64 oz bottle of charcoal lighter fluid now costs over $6 or about $13/gal. That's ridiculous.
I bought one last time I went shopping.
For a long time now, I just use gasoline. $3/gal here at the moment. Put enough, but as little as you need. And don't be couyon . Flick a match into the coals to start, or light a piece of newspaper or paper towel and throw it in there while maintaining a safe distance.
Gasoline burns off quickly and won't leave residue taste like lighter fluid if you try to cook too soon before the coals completely ash over(more couyon and plenty folks do dat) .
If the coals look like they will take a while because you didn't use enough gasoline, by no means!, do no attempt to add more gasoline! Just give them the time they need and have another beer or two.
I've used diesel too. Safe like lighter fluid , but like lighter fluid , you have to make sure it's all burned off and it takes a little longer the lighter fluid, normally.

Thats walmart brand price . Name brands like Royal Oak and Kingsford starter are closer to $10.
Over a decade ago, I realized there was no more premiere charcoal. I get the same results with cheaper charcoal and cheaper lighter fluid.
I prefer charcoal for the grill and propane for the smoker.

Nothing ,if you're a Cajun or just have common sense.Red Lily wrote:What could possibly go wrong?
I like to watch those vids of non Coonasses trying to fry a turkey under the carport. Lolol.
Always do Dat in da yard far from da house if you are not certified.
They always use too much oil or don't use a thermometer to cook at 325-350. And they don't take their time lowering the turkey into the pot.
The best scenario is when the oil boils over and they have to scrub the concrete.
Worst is when they burn the house down.

Re: Lighter Fluid and BBQ
I've typed this story before.
Many years ago, wheni refused to start paying $1000 to hunt in various clubs, or even one, I started hunting here, where I live now on my own property.
Some clubs where I also crawfished were still as little as $300/year.
On one club of about 800 acres, I paid nothing as an elected board member.
I missed the camaraderie but not hunting club politics!
Which are dirty and made personal by many.
I had a little camp back here and would usually spend a night or two on the weekends, hunting.
My youngest brother was very young. I guess still a teenager and him and his friends would also camp .
I'd buy a large bag of charcoal and leave it back there as it was the easiest, fastest way to cook when I got off my 5 day schedule which was tuesday-sat. I had Sunday and Monday off.
One Friday night, they went back there and camped and used all my charcoal . So sat night I went to cook and couldn't even find the bag! Lol
I was pissed.
They used so much damned charcoal when I opened the pit there was barely enough unburnt coals for me to cook a small, deer, backstrap roast I had stuffed and sesoned 2 days before.
I knocked the ashes off of those, piled them up, and started cooking.
I made a pact with the BBQ God's if they let me eat tonight, I would never waste charcoal again.
And I keep that promise to this day.
When i finish BBQing, I cut off all the air supply and save whatever charcoal I can.
Next time I cook on the pit , I remove the ashes and use a combo of old and fresh coals.
I swear, I can cook on a small pit, maybe 4 or 5 big pork chops or maybe 7-8 center cut pork chops with about 10 or 12 briquets. .....
It takes years of practice and being poor! Lololol.

Re: Lighter Fluid and BBQ
i never used newsprint to start the wood furnace. i always had lots of kindling flayed at the ends. i knew all about that from my paper route. id plastic bag each one before they hit my bike.
i knew about 25 motorcrossers growing up. 22 died before age 21 from lukemia. the three who didnt were the ones who never altered their gas caps and never syphoned gas.

I understand. But you need paper of some nature to fire up a chimney starter. Various barks and shavings may do the trick too.jirqoadai wrote:i never used newsprint to start the wood furnace. i always had lots of kindling flayed at the ends. i knew all about that from my paper route. id plastic bag each one before they hit my bike.

Maybe you don't know what a chimney charcoal starter is.
Having some organic chemistry training, and working in the refineries, I'm very familiar with benzene.
When I crawfished in the lower Atchafalaya Basin, Benzene Barges were a regular site.
It's said it the older days , that the barges/tows would discharge the benzene into the water and arrive empty at the offload site , only to return to the source to do it again.
Crawfish were larger then.
Just kidding, but I don't doubt the truth of the matter.
Everyone dies of cancer here. For decades.
That's why the Mississippi river corridor of refineries and chemical plants from baton rouge to the gulf is called , Cancer Alley.
Whether you work in the refineries or not .
