According to the story, the fox tested positive for rabies after it was put down.

A rabid animal can and in this instance did attack without provocation. In fact, it did appear to have actually sought out someone to attack. The ones I've seen were just too sick to do that, I guess. They just behaved strangely.

I've seen coyotes and foxes. They always run off. If they attack, something is wrong.

The exception is if you have small pets or children with you. Coyotes will stalk them if they are in a pack.
