Don’t believe China’s convenient historical tales. Taiwan belongs to the Taiwanese

The American sinologist Lucian Pye famously said that China is a “civilisation pretending to be a nation-state”. But it is precisely the opposite: China is a modern nation-state that pretends to be an ancient civilisation – when it suits its expansionist ambitions.

Nowhere is this clearer than it the way it talks about Taiwan, which it claims has been part of China since time immemorial. The government recently published a white paper – released in the context of unprecedented live-fire drills aimed at intimidating Taiwan after Nancy Pelosi’s visit – which begins by referencing the dispatching of troops to Taiwan by the Sui Dynasty (581–618). Chinese territorial claims over Taiwan often cite the history of the Ming dynasty warlord Koxinga, who made Taiwan his base of operations during his short-lived Kingdom of Tungning (1661-1683), or Taiwan’s formal incorporation into the Qing dynasty as a province in 1887.

Yet references to dynastic Chinese history to justify contemporary territorial claims are spurious. After all, the Chinese Communist party, which rules over the People’s Republic, is precisely one of the historical forces that overthrew imperial China. And the CCP has never controlled Taiwan in its 75-year history. It is not as though a pre-modern polity simply sending troops to Taiwan means that an entirely different polity, 1,500 years later, has the right to control it.

if you look at historical reality, the chinese who were defeated by Mao fled across the straight and butchered the formosans. the last 5,000 troops fleeing by way of laos into north vietnam before shipping from haiphong. before Mao, very few chinese were in formosa, and the ones who were there, were being hacked apart once they left the protection of the cities. your article is askew in falsehoods and myths. taking an island nation in 1948 and saying its yours by right of conquest rings so hollow.

It doesn't really matter if Taiwan "belongs" to China or not. The fact is that Biden is on the payroll of China so won't do anything about it. Even if he did, would anyone want the Demented-in-Chief commanding ANYTHING? I certainly wouldn't!

i think the real test of taiwan independence/sovereinty will be if they can develope the bolivian oil prospects discovered through 2D seismology. theyve farmed into Levins President Energy drilling hopes in the SW of bolivia. we can also watch their interactions with the locals as regards to community building.

The guy's got it right, though. Seems an awful lot of people are wanting to make decisions that involves others, w/o wanting to bother with the "other's" opinion of the matter.

news flash. after the japs grabbed formosa in 1910, they killed every male chinese who wasnt useful to them and kept the females as comfort women. when they saw an obviously prego, they killed her too. im sure they treated the formosans even worse.
