The Sri Lankan president, Gotabaya Rajapaksa, has agreed to resign after a dramatic day during which his house and offices were stormed by protesters and the home of the prime minister set on fire.

In a late-night message conveyed through the parliamentary speaker, Mahinda Yapa, the beleaguered president said he would step down from power on 13 July to “ensure a peaceful transition of power”.

It was an historic victory for the protesters who have been calling for him to resign for months and gathered on the streets of Colombo in their tens of thousands on Saturday, as the country continues to struggle through its worst economic crisis since independence.

Ealier prime minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, had told a meeting of party leaders that he too would resign as soon as a new all-party government was formed.

In extraordinary scenes on Saturday, protesters broke through police barriers and charged into the president’s official residence. Images and witness accounts showed people flooding up the grand staircase of the colonial-era building, with chants calling for the president to go.

As protesters poured into the bedrooms and kitchen and rifled through the president’s possessions, many took full advantage of the president’s luxury amenities which had been denied to them in recent weeks due to rampant food and fuel shortages. Protesters were seen cooking up curries in the kitchen, lying down on beds and sofas, lifting weights and jogging in his private gym and jumping into the outdoor pool.

Wow. I had no clue this was going on. But yes, cut off a man's ability to feed his family, and chaos will ensue. Doesn't help, either, when the people see what opulence the leader lives in, by comparison.

thats funny. everyone excluding me always said the Tamil Tigers wernt fighting for anything but to distabilized the government. and now, when a man cant feed his family.

dont look now, but ANYONE who did not report suspicious activity ( reads a Tamil person doing anything other than playing tiddlywinks ) they were killed. this rioting only means foreign investment has run out, and their stockmarket isnt worth five cents, and its all reset back to year zero.

I gotta go get a few extra boxes of tea at Wal-Mart before the prices goes up. Believe it or not, tea was one of the few items that had not yet gone up in price.

The current situation in Sri Lanka has been precipitated largely by the COVID-19 pandemic (ie China), which has negatively impacted many other countries. It was part of China's strategic war on man.

The pandemic resulted in shrinking Sri Lanka's tourism industry that had been contributing 12-15 percent of its national income. It also resulted in the contraction of Sri Lankan export markets, mainly in Western countries and China.

"Over 60 percent of our garment production was exported to Europe and the US. The Pandemic also caused a reduction of the remittances of Sri Lankan workers abroad. These were compounded by inflation and shortages of fuel, cooking gas, food and medicines, which are sourced from abroad.

China cannot cloak its destruction of the global economy but for the chi-com flag, which is tantamount to a declaration of global war against all.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has acknowledged that Sri Lanka is negotiating a bailout with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) “as a bankrupt country.”

Sri Lanka is not the only South Asian country facing an economic crisis that borrowed heavily from China for infrastructure projects, which the Chinese have described as part of its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). Nepal, Maldives and Pakistan are also going through economic convulsions.
