Fla sheriff tells homeowners they are ‘more than welcome’ to shoot burglars: ‘We prefer that you do’

Lest would-be house burglars in Florida have any doubts about their safety, Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson stated Thursday that homeowners in his county are “more than welcome to shoot at” anyone who tries to break into their homes.

“We prefer that you do, actually,” Johnson said.

The sheriff was speaking at a press conference about the arrest on Wednesday of “frequent flyer” criminal Brandon J. Harris, who, according to Johnson, has been on his police department’s radar since he was 13 years old.

This time around, authorities were alerted via multiple calls of a suspicious person in a Pace neighborhood, roughly 15 miles north of Pensacola, according to the Miami Herald.

Approximately 40 minutes after the first call was received, one homeowner shot at Harris, who literally dodged a bullet and continued running through the neighborhood.

Before anybody condemns the sheriff, they should be aware that the sheriff would not have to send his deputies into a hostile situation if homeowners can defend themselves. It also avoids an expensive trial and lengthy incarceration at taxpayers' expense.

I think it is reasonable to defend yourself. Esp if your home is being invaded.
I mean, they are not there to vacuum your carpet for you, they are not there to help you.
Likely they are dangerous.

Wonder what the stats say about it all.

Some cops here I knew said 'if you are driving home and think someone may be in your home, keep driving, no not interrupt them. Drive to a police station , tell us. DO not ever confront them.'

We were in a neighbourhood watch group

I would block their vehicle in with my vehicle and call the police and explain the situation to them.  They will hurry to my home to prevent a gunfight.  If someone comes out of my house,  I am armed and waiting for them.  Obviously,  I wouldn't do this if I had loved ones with me.
