Military kids in Fairfax County Public Schools were told they have “privilege” in an approved English lesson defended by school officials.
According to screenshots and curriculum information retained by the Daily Wire, the students would play “privilege bingo” where they would get privilege points depending on how many squares they marked.
Some of the squares listed: “white,” “Christian,” “heterosexual,” “cisgender,” “male,” “mentally healthy,’ — and “military kid.”
The military kid square made many parents upset and some pointed out how military kids move around all the time, have one parent at home if the other is deployed, and have more of a risk of losing a parent.
Fairfax County is located in northern Virginia where a lot of military families move to.

The parents who complained received a note from the assistant superintendent Douglas A. Tyson which stated:
“The screen shot you reference comes from an approved FCPS English Curriculum lesson that is centered around students selecting a ‘choice’ test and examining in detail the author’s perspective on a wide-range [sic] of issues. Students are asked, in the lesson, to read critically and think critically about the author’s perspective on several fronts including the author’s privilege that may or may not be present in the work,” Tyson said.
“Students are then asked independently and self reflectively to juxtapose their thoughts regarding any perceived privilege they think they may have and how they would potentially rewrite portions of the text,” he added. “Students are not asked or required to report out their self-reflections. This lesson is an adept vehicle to push student thinking to challenge the author’s thoughts/conclusions and to sharpen their ability to critically lead selected texts.”
Virginia’s new governor Glenn Youngkin signed legislation on Saturday that banned critical race theory from public schools.
“Political indoctrination has no place in our classrooms,” he said in the order.
“The vast majority of learning in our schools involves imparting critical knowledge and skills in math, science, history, reading and other areas that should be non-controversial. Inherently divisive concepts, like Critical Race Theory and its progeny, instruct students to only view life through the lens of race and presumes that some students are consciously or unconsciously racist, sexist, or oppressive, and that other students are victims,” Youngkin said. “This denies our students the opportunity to gain important facts, core knowledge, formulate their own opinions, and to think for themselves.”
