an average cosmonaut? srsly? didnt kruschev make sure his public party line outshowed his propensity to consume a gallon of vodka? as for the crash, executions come in all forms.

Gagarian (I'll never spell it right without looking) was just one of several who were basically average pilots, I read, that were generally unknown basically expendable, being the reason he got the job. He was qualified but it was felt he would not be missed if tragedy struck, which was a real possibility since Soviet space technology of that time was "sub-par" by even their accounts. Ours wasn't much better. (You will remember pics of techs in the NASA flight control room smoking like a forest fire).

As for deliberately killing him off, you aren't the first to suppose so, but why would they? Because his fame and adoration had grown to the degree as to threaten Stalin? It was an era of mega pop-stars and heroes, after all.

By the way, does this board and others like it have anything comparable in the Soviet Union? It certainly has none in China. The same mind-set here is trying to kill it, however.
