UK Researchers: Cheap Cholesterol Drug Reduces Covid-19 Infection by 70%
A cheap drug that treats cholesterol reduces Covid infection by 70% in lab studies, according to a team of researchers in the UK.
The researchers published their findings in the Frontiers in Pharmacology journal on Friday.
Fenofibrate and fenofibric acid significantly reduced Covid infection in human cells so expect this affordable medication to be blacklisted soon.
“Our data indicates that fenofibrate may have the potential to reduce the severity of COVID-19 symptoms and also virus spread,” Dr. Elisa Vicenzi of the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan and co-author, said in the release. “Given that fenofibrate is an oral drug which is very cheap and available worldwide, together with its extensive history of clinical use and its good safety profile, our data has global implications.”
Fox News reported:
A drug meant to treat cholesterol was found to reduce coronavirus infection by 70% in lab studies, with researchers calling for additional clinical trials among hospitalized COVID-19 patients.
The team called for added clinical trials to explore use of the drug as a potential COVID-19 therapy, while noting studies are ongoing at the University of Pennsylvania and Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Dr. Farhat Khanim of the University of Birmingham and corresponding study author, cited viral variants spurring rising infection rates and deaths in countries around the world.
“Whilst vaccine programmes will hopefully reduce infection rates and virus spread in the longer term, there is still an urgent need to expand our arsenal of drugs to treat SARS-CoV-2-positive patients,” Khanim wrote.
Another author noted that significant proportions of populations in most low-and-middle countries will likely go unvaccinated until 2022.
“Whilst vaccination has been shown to reduce infection rates and severity of disease, we are as yet unsure of the strength and duration of the response. Therapies are still urgently needed to manage COVID-19 patients who develop symptoms or require hospitalisation,” Dr Alan Richardson, of Keele University in the UK, wrote in part.
The drug was suggested to work by inhibiting the harmful overproduction of cytokines tied to coronavirus infection, and also treat airway inflammation. Additional properties could prevent blood clotting seen in late-stage disease in many COVID-19 patients, study authors noted.

Good find - thanks

................ A research team led by the University of Birmingham and Keele University in the UK has found that a licensed oral drug, fenofibrate, and its active form, fenofibric acid, can substantially reduce SARS-CoV-2 infection in human cells in the laboratory.
Approved in various countries, fenofibrate is being used for the treatment of conditions such as increased cholesterol and fatty substance levels in the blood.
Fenofibrate decreased Covid-19 infection by up to 70% at concentrations that are safe and attainable with its standard clinical dose, the University of Birmingham noted.
Led by the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Italy, the research was conducted in partnership with the University of Copenhagen in Denmark and the University of Liverpool, UK.
In the study, researchers analysed a panel of presently licensed drugs, including fenofibrate, to detect candidates that can interrupt angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) and Spike interactions.
Fenofibrate was selected and assessed for efficacy in reducing infection in cells in the laboratory with the use of the SARS-CoV-2 original strains isolated last year.
Furthermore, additional unpublished findings showed that the drug worked against the newly emergent SARS-CoV-2 variants such as the Alpha and Beta variants.
The university added that further research is underway to analyse the drug’s efficacy against the Delta variant. .....................

But, if you don't need blood pressure meds, it's dangerous to take them.
So, it's not beneficial to everyone.

If the drug helps the WuFlu then it will be pulled off the list of drugs your doctor can prescribe for you, it doesn't make big pharma enough money!

HIgh LDL no longer associated with heart disease.
LOL They really know jack about cholesterol...or anything else for that matter. Your GP doesn't know anything...all he is is the middle man for you getting your scripts and THAT. is it. He can't answer your questions, nothing is ever wrong, he couldn't identify a virus or bacterial infection or any disease if it up and bit him on the nose.

I'm not sure that GP's "can't answer questions nor can't identify a virus". I believe it's more a matter of, going against the liberal narrative will put them out of business.

Guy ate 720 eggs in a month expecting his cholesterol to go up...well guess what. IT DIDN"T.

Saturated fat increases cholesterol..and doctors don't know enough about cholesterol to prescribe anything. Some people genetically have higher cholesterol levels and there is some 'evidence' to show that too low cholesterol is unhealthy. Your body needs cholesterol. It covers your cells. They don't call it a 'practice' for nothing.

every ten or 15 years they reverse their thinking.....i guess to stay relevant. They sure messed up with the covid response thing..they are gov't doctors...didn't even take to 2050. They'll kill you now....gently....when the gov't sanctions it...quietly.
And this bunch of so called doctors and nurses coming out of their 'schools' today?? Know nothing. except Social justice and DIE. they don't know how to put a foam neckbrace on a patient but they know social justice.

IF cholesterol is not the killer that gov't doctors have tried to sell us on then what kills these folk who are being treated for High cholesterol.
How about the treatment? how about the doctor telling the patient that they are in danger because their cholesterol is so high...causing stress to the patient and that is what kills them...but mostly the drug treatment. THAT is what they should be looking into.
Garlic is like roto rooter for the arteries. Cholesterol in food is not the problem. IT IS THE SATURATED FAT.*
* Caps for emphasis only.
