Possibly... If you go back to the time of Jesus, the "government" (i.e. the Roman empire), thought that they had thwarted the Jews by murdering Jesus. The end result was not that the movement stopped but, that it got stronger and lasted longer. Today, the Roman empire does not exist but, Christianity and Jesus does.

In all fairness to Pilate, he did what he could to avoid crucifying Jesus. It was the Pharisees using the Romans to accomplish their ends and that was to crucify Jesus. It was God's plan all along and Jesus' job.
