Professor to white male student: ‘You’re breathing … you may have oppressed somebody’
Pennsylvania State University Professor Sam Richards attempted to shame two white male students concerning privilege and discrimination during a lecture, telling one of them that if he is breathing or going outside, he may be oppressing someone.
During a March 4 live stream, as reported by Campus Reform, Richards asked one student named Brian, “Who have you oppressed today?” Brian answered, “I haven’t oppressed anyone today.”
“You’re breathing. Have you left your house today?” countered Richards. “Yes,” Brian stated. “Okay, so you may have oppressed somebody,” the professor asserted.
The altercation occurred during a 700-student class entitled, “SOC119: Race and Ethnic Relations” where Richards discussed privilege and discrimination, according to Campus Reform. It was also viewed by thousands on Twitter and YouTube. His controversial and contentious race-based teaching has raised serious concerns over Critical Race Theory in the classroom.
Richards chose two white male students as examples of oppression while discussing Coca-Cola’s “be less White” training.
He asked for both students’ thoughts concerning a slide that read, “To be less white is to be less oppressive, be less arrogant, be less certain, be less defensive, be less ignorant, be more humble, listen, believe, break with party, break with white solidarity.”
“I think, you know, it’s more or less just recognizing the advantages you have in life,” one student responded. “Whatever that may be, and not thinking yourself superior because of that.”
Richards was very pleased by that response, “Awesome answer man.”
That was when Richards turned to Brian and asked him, “What white people would find that offensive?”
“Conservatives, I guess,” Brian replied.
Richards then asked him, “What would they find offensive about it?”
When the student hesitated, Richards stated, “White people have been like, ‘we’re oppressors, we’re arrogant, we’re really confident or certain, defensive — and dumb. White people are dumb. That’s a message: White people are dumb. That is a key message right there.”
Yet this is not an unusual approach when this professor is lecturing. During a June 30 lecture, the professor singled out another student named Russell, “I just take the average white guy in class, whoever it is, it doesn’t really matter. ‘Dude, this guy here. Stand up, bro. What’s your name, bro?'”
“Look at Russell, right here, it doesn’t matter what he does,” Richards noted during the class. “If I match [Russell] with a black guy in class — or a brown guy, even, but let me just stay with a black guy in glass who’s just like him, has the same GPA, looks like him, walks like him, talks like him, acts in a similar way, has been involved in the same groups on campus, takes the same leadership positions, does whatever it is. If I match him up against that person, we send him into the same jobs, upon graduation, he does everything he’s supposed to do. And the person I match him with has done everything he has been supposed to do…at Penn State. … [I]f Russell did the same things as…somebody else I find in this classroom and they go through four years exactly together, Russell has a benefit of having white skin.”
The professor went on to ask his student, “Bro — how’s it feel knowing that, push comes to shove, your skin’s kind of nice?”
“I don’t know. I mean, it makes me feel, like, sad. ‘Cause, like, God knows I don’t deserve it. You know what I mean? Like, I didn’t choose to be white. So like, you know what I mean? Like, it makes me upset that, like, my brother and sisters of like, other races can’t, like, experience those things for something that I didn’t, like, you know, I didn’t do anything to, like, deserve that. You know what I mean? And so like, it just makes me upset,” Russell answered.
“This is the problem with white people,” Richards remarked.

Is the professor white?
He's oppressing his white students...i guess that doesn't count.

People actually pay good money to subject themselves to this crap? Then call it education?
I can't help them. Nobody can. Maybe Speilberg or oprah can.
