Then...you get to dig a hole to bury that thing in.  Hope you have your own backhoe, otherwise you're gonna still be at it long after the bear started stinking.

I really don't want to even see that bear, I hope he's been trapped or, has moved on by the time I go up next.

And yes, I have a backhoe.

Me too. I heard a woman scared it off of her front porch, with an AK.

I think it was Glendale that had a visitor bear. He never hurt anyone. He dug around in trash cans, swam in pools and slept in trees. People encountered him ambling along all over the city. A restaurant once put out a platter of meatballs for him. Hence the name Meatball.

He was captured and returned to the wild several times but always came back to the old neighborhood. Finally he was taken 20 miles away up in the mountains. It took Meatball 3 months to come home. He was skinny and showed the marks of fights, scars and wounds.

A behavioral expert opined that Meatball had lost the ability to live in the wild. He didn't know how to forage and was marginally successful at defending himself. The best thing to do would be to humanely euthanize the bear.

The citizens of Glendale were having none of it. Meatball was almost a town pet. As starving as he was, he never attacked human or animal. Dumpsters were a different story and he had his favorites. A sanctuary was located that would give Meatball security for the rest of his life. A fundraiser in his name quickly raised transportation money. He might be there to this day.

The quick loss of ability to forage for food, is a real concern with these situations.

When I was a little kid, every summer, until I was ten, we'd go for three weeks to the Adirondack Preserve. North of my mother's hometown.

There was an old-school cabin court there, long story how it figured in my parents' relationship. They honeymooned there, although that wasn't the plan. Real long story.

But anyway. We were there every summer; and my old man was a tech enthusiast for the toys of the times. Polaroid cameras. Bell & Howell home-movie cameras.

Back then, these little hamlets in the rolling hills, just dumped garbage in town dumps. Open pits. A town caretaker would come in once a week to burn it all and maybe bulldoze it.

And brown bears were all over the place. They didn't seem to like people much, but they sure loved the garbage. We got in the habit of taking our own garbage to the dump, and always at evening, when the bears gathered.

Until the day. When my old man got out of the Rambler wagon with his movie camera, closing in on a bear. Bear didn't like that, much. He's just eating some yummy garbage, and this two-legger is crowding his space!

The bear took a few steps towards him...obviously the bear wanted the garbage more than the fight, but that was enough.

Last time we went to the dump. Actually, last summer that we were there. Shortly thereafter, the owner died in a hunting accident, the widow gave control to her son-in-law, who had other plans for the land.
