because it was when an election result was attempted to be overturned by mob rule.
the president who lost the election held an inflammatory public speech immediately before the riot encouraging those there to riot. During the riot for 3 hours he did nothing to quell the violence.
After the riot he lost 60 court cases trying to overturn the result through courts.
It put america on the same footing as many african states who have military overthrows.
